Workshop B: How to Tackle Measurement Challenges Through Strategy, Business-Driven Communications and HR Goals
Brilliant Ink & Poppulo
One of our greatest opportunities as internal communications and HR professionals is to effectively unlock the power of employee data. While our colleagues in Marketing have long used data-driven insights to set and refine strategies, we’ve faced a number of challenges — from a lack of resources and tools, to lack of clarity around which metrics will help us move the needle.

In this highly interactive workshop, we’ll dive into some of your greatest measurement challenges and brainstorm ways to overcome these barriers. We’ll discuss various measurement approaches, and then strategies for both defining and effectively measuring business-driven communications and HR goals.

After participating in this workshop, you’ll understand how to:

  • Implement the right measurement strategy to elevate your role in the organization
  • Set communications and engagement goals that clearly connect to business goals
  • Identify and prioritize engagement metrics, from Open and Click Rates to Employee Net Promoter Scores
  • Develop different reporting approaches for different audience requirements
  • Use people data to effectively meet your communications and engagement goals
  • Translate date into actionable insights

Measure Behavior, Not Internal Communications, to Drive Recruitment
Bloomberg LP
How many of your employees read last week's intranet article? Did you generate awareness about open enrollment? Has your CEO's strategy video gone viral on Yammer yet?

Measuring employee communications as though you are a publisher selling advertising is a mug's game. Unless, of course, you are selling ads in your employee newsletter. But you're not, are you? So, stop counting clicks and refocus your energy on the observable behaviors that propel your business rather than generating nebulous non-outcomes like awareness.

Instead of measuring communications, learn to focus on employee activation and see improvements to your ability to use communications to drive recruitment outcomes, including learning:

  • Why strategic planning is essential to meaningful measurement
  • Why the term "internal communications" is long overdue for retirement
  • The fundamental difference between performance metrics and improvement metrics
  • The digital drivers challenging historical asymmetries of power between employers and employees and how professional communicators need to change their tune
  • Easy-to-implement killer employee activation tactics

Developing Leaders and Engaging Teams on the FLY in Only 10 Minutes a Week
Alaska Airlines

Alaska Air Group leaders were busier than they had ever been.  Faced with 30% more work during the acquisition and integration of Virgin America, leaders couldn’t carve out time for development. Alaska Air needed a way to remind leaders of best practices, give them tools to connect with their people and inspire them to be out connecting with their employees.

TheTake 10 leadership challenge was launched on July 10th to do just that.  A ten-week challenge of leadership activities, distributed via an app on their mobile devices (especially important for a mobile workforce!), provided leaders with development opportunities focused on engaging their employees.

Discover new strategies to inspire leaders and increase employee engagement, including how to:

  • Plan and execute an innovative leadership/engagement program
  • Create momentum and excitement around similar types of programs/campaigns
  • Understand the technology used to support the program

How Your Communications & Human Resources Departments Can Collaborate to Drive Effective Communication During Extreme Change
Johnson Controls
In 2016, Johnson Controls and Tyco announced their intention to merge into a combined organization. That same year, Johnson Controls was spinning off its automotive business. Imagine the challenges faced when driving communication efforts for more than 200,000 employees.

Focusing on the company that would remain, a newly combined culture and transparent communications were top priorities – especially during a time of such critical importance and extensive change. Part of the responsibility was led by the Communications function, but another big part was led by Human Resources.

Learn how the teams at Johnson Controls and Tyco collaborated across companies, as well as functional teams, to build one cohesive employee communications strategy and the corresponding story.

In this session, see how Communications and HR partnered together to lead extensive cultural and organizational change through a major merger. Learn how to:

  • Identify best practices to build a combined communications strategy
  • Use technologies to gather employee input and influence a dynamic communications plan
  • Engage leaders as a critical communications channel
